The Cups

Secondary Shield

The Secondary Shield is a knockout team competition open to all affiliated teams, apart from those in Division 1. There is no entry fee. Each fixture comprises nine singles matches played as the best of five games.

Consolation Cup

All teams eliminated in their first fixture of the Secondary Shield qualify automatically for the Consolation Cup. Each fixture comprises nine singles matches played as the best of five games.

Stanley Doubles

This is a knockout team competition open to all affiliated teams.  There is no entry fee.  Each fixture comprises nine doubles matches played as the best of five games.

Chairman’s Challenge

This is a knockout team competition open to the teams in Division 1. There is no entry fee.  Each fixture comprises five singles matches and two doubles matches played as the best of five games. See the Handbook or the Chairman’s Challenge scorecard for details of how match pairings are derived.

Excelsior Cup

This is also a knockout team competition open to all affiliated teams. Each fixture comprises nine singles matches played as the best of five games. For 2015/16 there is no entry fee for this competition.

Handicap Cup

The Handicap Cup is a knockout competition for all affiliated teams. There is no entry fee.  Each fixture comprises nine singles matches. A match comprises two games and the team that wins the most games progresses to the next round. If the teams are tied at nine games each, the ninth match pairing will play a third deciding game. Teams will be notified prior to each round of fixtures about the handicaps for each of their players and how many points require to be won to win each game.

Gillis Cup

The Gillis Cup is an individual competition held towards the end of the season, open to players from Divisions 3 and below.  There is no entry fee.

Chris Halliday Cup

Held in memory of Christine Halliday, this is a team competition with a twist. Entry is by invitation and usually limited to the teams from the lower reaches of the lowest division. Three person teams usually play matches to 61 points (deciding point at 60 all). Players from each team can be rotated during a match provided no player is at the table for more than 10 consecutive points.

Apart from the Gillis and Halliday Cups, teams are requested to indicate whether they intend to enter each cup competition when registering at the start of the season.
